Beaufort Scale on Wind Speeds

Date of Publication: January 4th, 2019 EDIT:  I know most of you are just here for the graphics

But this graphic is current as of Sept 11th, 2023 for Los Cabos, Baja California Sur

This information might be helpful no matter where you are in the world when watching the weather channel.

To keep things simple … when you hear gale-force winds, as an example, go to your favorite weather app, and look at the 10-day forecast to see if any of the above applies to you.

(Not off-topic … Many people ask what weather station I use and I do not mind sharing. It is an Ambient Weather WS-1001-WIFI-CONSOLE Console but I’m deciding on an upgrade and am torn between the Ambient Weather Station Ws-5000 and the Davis Cabled Vantage Pro2 The one I am currently using is very affordable but has been discontinued. The link below that says Personal Weather Station #ad will show you just how many models are available.

Personal Weather Station

Plus, thankfully I will not be upgrading this year so I have a bit more time to decide. The links above are what I am looking at, but in the end, the key deciding factor will be the highest miles per hour the PWS records, and the accuracy of rainfall. I’m only looking at the spendy ones because I want to be able to record (hopefully never needed) up to 200mph and I want a larger rain cup.

If YOU have a personal weather station, you can help Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo to have more accurate forecasts in the future. Please see this link for more information on how to connect your station, as there are currently only 3 including my own that is currently sending date in San Lucas.)

I suppose if one wanted to, we could say based on the scales below that gale force winds are the same as tropical storm winds because they are.

For the record, I very much like to know when we are expecting sustained “Fresh Breeze” because that means I can expect gusts up to outright “Gale”  That way, I can ensure the patio umbrellas are down because one good gust and those things take flight in ways that Mary Poppins would be jealous of if she was in a hurry. Sure her hair would get messed up but … right now all I see is a chance of a little rain this weekend, and not from the big blobby thingie.

Let us take a peek at the Beaufort Wind Speed Scale

Now let us look at stronger winds from the Saffir/Simpson Scale (I do wish there was a scale for buildings made out of blocks with re-bar but whatevs)

Hopefully soon, I will have a new layout for the babbling weather blog so that when you want to see something at a glance, like the current graphics issued by various agencies (I actually have a page for that but it’s always hiding with the current set-up) or to find suggested prep lists at a glance, since I mostly only cover major weather alerts for emergencies … in a non-professional manner as this is and always will be for entertainment purposes.  ALWAYS, refer to the pro’s in the event of a real emergency (just covering my little rear, though I sometimes think they do not tell us the truth)

Until next time!

xoxo,

Just Jenn
