We already know that Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are considered the best places to vacation by many notable websites and publications such as Trip Advisor, Travel Weekly, Golf Digest, and Condé Nast Traveler. If you’ve never been to Cabo San Lucas, click the pic below to find great deals and packages!
It is also a great place to live though our tiny little fishing village isn’t so tiny anymore! Our population has grown 1,157.78% in the last 34 years, if another source has their numbers right (and they very well might be, if they were reporting on just Cabo San Lucas and left out the rest of the municipality).
So I did a little digging on the internet and found that in 2020 the population of Los Cabos was 351,111 (51.5% men and 48.5% women) compared to 2010 estimating a 47.2% population growth in just 10 years. I know, right?
I see a lot of arguments on social media regarding the cause of the population growth and traffic, but according to economia.gob.mx, the foreign immigration from 2015 to 2020 was as follows: roughly 1,450 people migrated to Los Cabos (this would be full-time residents, presumably) from the U.S.A., 144 from Cuba, 112 from Spain, 53 Columbia, 45 Canada, 33 Argentina, and 22 from France, leaving the rest of the population growth presumably from other parts of Mexico. Of course, there is a margin of error, they say they have a 90% level of confidence in the accuracy, but when it comes to being part of a census, I am well aware that often times they do not knock on doors or return if no one is at home at the time. The census for businesses is another matter, they will keep coming back until someone is available to fill out the form. All data above is from Inegi, according to “Economia”.
I checked out Inegi’s website. In 2015 they estimated a population of 287,671 people and in 2020 351,111 which is a growth rate of 4% per year, which is roughly 63,440 people that moved here during the 5 year time span of the census. So …. less than 2,000 people moved to Los Cabos from 2015 to 2020 from other countries vs other than other parts of Mexico. It will be interesting to compare these numbers in 2025 when the next official census numbers come out.
According to Inegi’s website, as of 2020, the state of Baja California Sur had a population of 798,447 (https://www.inegi.org.mx/app/areasgeograficas/?ag=03#collapse-Resumen) people. I wish I’d been able to find the stats just for Cabo San Lucas. I will continue to search!
