Temperature Truths: Why ‘Feels Like’ Isn’t the Real Temp
Because yes, it’s hot — but no, La Paz didn’t spontaneously turn into Mercury.

On August 6, 2025, a post started circulating on Facebook listing extreme “sensación térmica” (feels like) temperatures for several cities in Baja California Sur: numbers like 52.9°C in La Paz and 48.3°C in San José del Cabo.
Those numbers are correct for feels-like readings — but they’re not actual temperatures. Let’s translate them into standard readings from professional weather stations:
Loreto: High of 101°F with 37% humidity
Constitución: High of 101.3°F with 36% humidity
San José del Cabo (Viejo station): High of 97°F with 57% humidity
Santa Rosalía: High of 95°F, dew point 82°F (no humidity reading available)
Cabo San Lucas: High of 90°F with 77% humidity, dew point 75.5°F (my station in Pedregal); El Tezal was ~2°F hotter
Quick refresher:
Actual Temperature – Straightforward air temp, measured in the shade.
Feels Like / Heat Index – Combines humidity, wind, and other factors to describe how your body perceives the heat.
Ambient Temperature – Basically the same as air temp, just a fancier term.
Dew Point – The moisture in the air; higher means stickier, sweatier days.
Why ‘50°C’ Isn’t a Record – Feels like temps are not official records, even though they’re useful for gauging comfort and safety.
In fact, that “50°C heatwave” in La Paz? It was followed by hail in isolated areas the very next day.
The takeaway: Weather is fascinating enough without clickbait. Accurate information helps keep everyone safe, so if you see big, dramatic numbers online, share the context too.
Stay cool, stay informed, keep hydrated, and remember: in Baja, the weather can change not just season to season, but hour to hour.
