Elida spent the last couple of days looking like she wanted to become a hurricane at any moment.
Meteorologists kept saying the environment was nearly perfect:
- 🌡️ Water temperatures around 29-30°C
- (Bathwater-warm ocean temperatures (around 84–86°F))
- 💨 Low wind shear
- 💧 Plenty of tropical moisture
But…
Every time Elida looked ready to strengthen, something got in the way.
🎬 So what’s happening now?
Dry air has continued sneaking into the circulation, preventing Elida from building the solid inner core needed for rapid strengthening.
The National Hurricane Center still says Elida could briefly become a hurricane during the next day…
…but that window is closing.
Once Elida reaches cooler ocean water this weekend, weakening should begin.
🌴 What about Los Cabos?
The forecast still keeps Elida well offshore.
There are no coastal watches or warnings for Baja California Sur.
The biggest impact will likely be larger swells and dangerous rip currents along portions of the Pacific coast of Baja California this weekend.
🎭 Meanwhile… the casting director isn’t done.
While Elida continues her performance over the open Pacific, another tropical wave south of mainland Mexico has started attracting attention.
The National Hurricane Center now gives it:
🟡 Medium chance of development during the next 48 hours.
🔴 High chance of development during the next 7 days.
If it develops, it will continue moving generally west-northwest well offshore.
(It’s much too early to know exactly how that story unfolds.)

Elida still hasn’t become the hurricane many forecast models expected by now…
…and another potential cast member has already walked into the audition room.
Hurricane season never really lets the writers take a day off.
