Hurricane Genevieve remains a powerful Category 3 hurricane this morning with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph (110 kt), but forecasters say a gradual weakening trend is underway.
Satellite imagery shows the eye has become slightly more ragged overnight, and the National Hurricane Center notes that small fluctuations in intensity are still possible today. There is also about a 33% chance of an eyewall replacement cycle during the next 24 hours.
The forecast track remains good news for Baja California Sur. Genevieve continues moving west-northwest, taking the center farther offshore with no coastal watches or warnings in effect for the peninsula.
As the hurricane moves over cooler waters later this week and encounters drier air, weakening is expected to continue. Genevieve is forecast to fall below hurricane strength within a couple of days before becoming post-tropical this weekend.
Although the storm is moving away, visitors and residents should continue paying attention to local beach conditions. Swells generated by Genevieve may still create dangerous surf and rip currents along portions of the Baja coastline.
