What is a storm without a name? Depressed. (TD One-E)

Edited to update: Tropical Storm Adrian is officially the earliest named storm in modern day records (satellite imagery)

End edit. It’s late. Sleep well everyone. 😴
So What is a Tropical Depression anyways?

In a nutshell, it’s a group of thunderstorms that have merged together in an orderly fashion with wind speeds from approx. 23-39mph and the air pressure is low-ish. We can get into air pressure another time.

So now I introduce you to our first depressed group of thunderstorms of the season which hasn’t “officially” begun … Tropical Depression One-E 1,546 miles AWAY from Cabo and NOT headed here. Max sustained winds 35mph with gusts up to 45mph … kinda like MY house the other day – kid. you. not.

I do believe this system just beat Alma’s record!  Alma didn’t become a TD until May 12th, a TS on the 14th and wasn’t a hurricane until the 15th of 1990.

Okay so then what is a Tropical Storm? That is when the tropical depression gets some self esteem and it’s wind speeds have increased to 39-73mph. It becomes such a big deal, it even gets a name as those clouds start circling round and round … like a hurricane does but without the eye.

Anyhoo … this is from the NHC:
